Our History

When Fay and Rhonda originally opened the lighting business it was known as Milton Road Lighting and it was situated at the corner of Milton Road and Croydon Street at Milton. That was in February of 1993. Fay had worked with a few of the well-known lighting stores and was keen to test her skills in business.

As one would expect, it took a little while for word to get around but many of Fay’s clients found their way into the store, chasing the quality of service they had become accustomed to.

Rhonda, like Fay, really enjoys conversing with clients, offering lighting options and assisting them with determining the right solutions. Some will recall the lighting display at Milton Road Lighting; it was hard to miss if you were driving into the city from the western suburbs along Milton Road.

In the early stages the concentration was on pendants, flush fittings, wall brackets (internal and external), garden lights and globes. But over the years the breadth of options has grown considerably and gone through a few phases. By way of example – remember the ceiling recessed R80 fittings, then the halogen dichroics that could consume a lot of power, followed by the energy saving fluorescent lamps which have now been superceded by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs).

In 2002 Rhonda decided the premises at Milton Road were just not large enough so she scouted around for alternatives ultimately choosing to purchase premises at Milton Village on Lang Parade. Obviously the business name had to change and it was shortened to just Milton Lighting. To help build custom and ensure clients knew of our whereabouts Rhonda regularly advertised in the Brisbane News and the Courier-Mail and those advertisements featured many of the lights on display in store.

The new premises provided an opportunity to expand on the lighting display in more pleasant surroundings and ensured adequate parking facilities were available for clients. A few years later Fay retired from the business and over subsequent years Rhonda has grown the staff, training them in service skills and product knowledge. As the customer base grew the advertising focus changed and for a number of years Milton Lighting chose to display some of the outcomes for our clients in the Queensland Homes magazine.

Unfortunately store operations were impacted by the floods of January 2011. However, the store was reopened to customers after the initial clean-up so past orders could be met and, with a concerted effort, about 10 weeks later the store was back in full swing – new walls, new furnishings, new displays, etc.

In more recent times Rhonda saw the necessity for a web site as a principal advertising measure and in the past few months attention has been given to upgrading the web site, offering an online shop and broadening the range of product to be viewed online.

Rhonda now has Rachel, Matthew and Caroline to help in delivering quality to service to the clients of Milton Lighting. They are all keen and enthusiastic so why not pop into the store and let us help you choose the solutions that will bring life and colour to your home and garden.
